The Realist’s Guide to Fall in the North Metro: Orchards, Trails & Terror
The Best 6 Weeks of the Year
In Minnesota, we earn our autumns. After the humidity of July and before the deep freeze of January, we get about six weeks of perfection. The air is crisp, the bugs are dead, and the state turns into a painting.
But the window is short. If you blink, you miss peak colors. If you wait too long, the Honeycrisps are picked over.
This is my “Realist’s Guide” to maximizing Fall in the North Metro—from the best apple cider donuts to the hiking trails that actually offer a view.

You don’t need to drive all the way to beautiful (but crowded) Jordan or Stillwater to get good apples. The North Metro has some of the best, quieter spots.
- Victoria Valley Orchard (Shoreview):
- The Vibe: Authentic and no-frills. This isn’t a theme park; it’s an orchard.
- Best For: People who actually want to buy apples without paying admission fees. Their Haralson apples make the best pies.
- Pine Tree Apple Orchard (White Bear Lake):
- The Vibe: The classic family experience.
- Best For: The bakery. Their apple turnover is legendary, and the corn maze is great for wearing out the kids before bedtime.
- Sunrise River Farm (Wyoming):
- The Vibe: Pet-friendly and laid back.
- Best For: A Sunday drive up Highway 61. They have great pumpkins and a petting zoo that feels more “farm” than “zoo.”
2. Hunting for Color: Best Foliage Drives & Hikes
Autumn State
Foliage. Trails. History. The best season to be a Minnesotan.
Peak Color Tracker
Plan your drive based on the “Color Line”.

The classic MN fall experience. Maples turn red first along the Sawtooth Mountains.

- Split Rock Lighthouse
- Basecamp: Lutsen
St. Croix River Valley
River bluffs reflecting gold and orange. Perfect for day trips from the Metro.
- Taylors Falls Overlook
- William O’Brien State Park

MN River Valley
The colors linger longest here. Deep oaks and rolling hills south of the city.
- Minnesota Valley NWR
- Seven Mile Creek Park
- Basecamp: Mankato
Top Fall Rides
Paved trails with minimal mud and maximum views.

“The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America”

Downtown energy. Cool crisp air.

Miles 2-8. Peak foliage reflections on the water.

Miles 20-23. The toughest part, but the most scenic historic mansions in the state.
State Capitol Finish
Downhill finish into the cathedral backdrop.
Other Fall Races
- Ely Marathon: (Sept) Run past the Boundary Waters. Very rustic.

Historic Sites & Architecture
Places where history looks better against a backdrop of leaves.
Summit Avenue
St. Paul
The longest stretch of Victorian homes in the country. The Gilded Age mansions look stunning against yellow leaves.
Split Rock
Two Harbors
Built in 1910. One of the most photographed lighthouses in the US. The cliffside birches turn bright gold.
Stone Arch Bridge
Minneapolis
A former railroad bridge offering the best panoramic view of the St. Anthony Falls and the mill district.
Pipestone NM
Pipestone
Native American quarry site. The red quartzite rock matches the deep reds of the prairie grasses in autumn.

Whether you want a view of the skyline or a cabin near the trailheads, I can help you find your spot in Minnesota.
Forget the North Shore traffic jam. You can see spectacular colors right here in Anoka & Hennepin County.
- The “River Road” Drive (Coon Rapids to Anoka):
- Driving along West River Road as the maples turn red is spectacular. It’s a 15-minute drive that feels like a vacation.
- Elm Creek Park Reserve (Maple Grove):
- The Hike: Take the paved trails for a smooth bike ride or dive into the unpaved paths for a rugged hike. The mix of oak and maple creates a canopy of orange that photographs beautifully.
- Rum River Regional Trail:
- The Hike: This trail winds from Anoka High School north. It’s quieter than the Mississippi trails and follows the river closely, offering great reflection shots of the leaves on the water.
3. The “Halloween Capital” Experience
You can’t live in the North Metro without acknowledging Anoka.
- The Grand Day Parade: It’s crowded, it’s loud, and it’s mandatory at least once.
- The Realist’s Tip: If you want to avoid the chaos of the main parade, check out the “Big Parade of Little People” or just visit the downtown shops (like The Big White House) on a random Tuesday in October to soak up the spooky vibes without the parking nightmare.
4. Must-Do Fall Checklist
If you only do three things this season, make them these:
- Bonfire Night: The bugs are gone. Invite the neighbors over.
- Winter Prep (The Boring Part): Disconnect your garden hoses before Halloween. I see so many frozen pipes in November because homeowners forgot this one simple step.
- Visit a “Non-Chain” Coffee Shop: Skip the Starbucks drive-thru and grab a seasonal latte from Amore Coffee or Truffles & Tortes in Anoka.
